What's On at City
Museum at Old Treasury Melbourne May 2007 / Current Exhibitions MAGGIE DIAZ – INTO THE LIGHT Since her arrival in 1961, American born photographer Maggie Diaz has made an indelible mark on the City of Melbourne. Her work has captured its unique culture and street life - from the emerging and sophisticated commercial world of advertising agencies in the 1960s, to the intense creative activity of grassroots theatre in Carlton in the 1990s. Her experiences of cultural dislocation as a migrant found expression in the exotic world of the Spanish clubs of Fitzroy. Through the use of available light, Diaz has developed a distinct and personal style that has informed her entire career, spanning almost fifty years. Now in her 80s, Diaz’s remarkable body of work has been brought together for the first time. This is a retrospective exhibition that also celebrates the story and life of this unconventional and passionate artist. EXHIBITION PARTNERS: EXHIBITION SUPPORTERS:

It’s irreverent, witty, crazy and ‘just for fun’. It’s the only art competition in the world judged by a sulphur-crested cockatoo, named Maude! Created in 1994 as a spoof of the Archibald Prize, the ‘Bald Archy’ provides artists of all styles and standards with a genuine opportunity, ranging from the hilarious to the bizarrely vulgar, to create portrait paintings of humour, dark satire, light comedy or caricature. Subjects this year include Jamie Packer, Amanda Vandstone, Julia Gillard, Dame Edna Everage, John Howard and Peter Costello, Hugh Jackman, Bindi Irwin, and Eddie McGuire. Spooks: Stories of Haunted Melbourne Spooks reveals the stories behind over twenty of our most loved haunted buildings and places; from the Princess Theatre to the Old Melbourne Gaol; from Como House to Werribee Mansion and beyond – exploring the lives of their historical inhabitants who may or may not still be with us today. Spooks presents documentary evidence of ghosts, combined with contemporary art and historical artefacts to bring to life Melbourne heritage in an ethereal shroud of mystery and possibility. / Events Wednesday 16 May Thursday 24 May Tuesday 29 May Friday 8 June Saturday 16 June Friday 22 June |
