City Museum building
Melbourne Bohemia 5 September to 25 November 07

The artist’s studio holds an immense and irresistible allure. As the chief location of bohemian mythology, its place in the popular consciousness thoroughly transcends its practical functions. We might see art in museums and galleries, but it is under the angled skylights of loft studios – among all the palettes, easels and brushes – that we imagine the drama of art unfolding.

Between 1900 and 1940 Melbourne provided a rare example of a city with purpose built artist studios in its CBD, with Gosvenor Chambers, at 9 Collins Street, occupying some of the most valuable real estate in Melbourne. Guest Curator Alex Taylor draws together significant works and ephemera to recount dramatic and sometimes scandalous moments of creation, decoration, socialising, sex and sales.
